Indonesia To Demolish Football Stadium
The Indonesian football stadium where a stampede killed 133 people will be torn down and rebuilt, President Joko Widodo said Tuesday, as the head of FIFA pledged to help "reform and transform" the sport in the country. More than 40 children were among those killed in the city of Malang, East Java on October 1, in what Mr Infantino described as "one of the darkest days for football".
Roger Binny appointed as 36th President of BCCI
Roger Binny, former Indian cricket team star and member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, was on Tuesday named as the 36th president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Binny replaces former India captain Sourav Ganguly. Binny, 67, was the only candidate to have filed nomination for the BCCI president's post. Binny, in his recent stint, was the Karnataka State Cricket Association President and will now leave his position in the state body.
New York Declares State of Emergency Over Polio
New York declared a state of emergency over polio in an effort to boost vaccination rates after evidence of the virus's spread mounted when it was found in wastewater samples in Nassau County on Long Island. The executive order expands the network of vaccine administrators to include emergency medical workers, midwives and pharmacists. Physicians and certified nurse practitioners will be able to issue non-patient-specific standing orders for the polio vaccine.
IAS officer takes on Himachal govt
An 1987 Batch IAS officer, Nisha Singh, who was superseded for the top administrative post in Himachal Pradesh has opened a front against Chief Secretary RK Dhiman asking how he, being a junior, can advise Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur regarding her official works. In a letter to the Governor, Ms Nisha Singh has stated that the Dhiman’s appointment as Chief Secretary on July 14 this year was done without “assigning any reason” while she was “superseded”.
Maharashtra govt charged with ₹12,000 cr
Maharashtra government has been directed to pay ₹12,000 crore by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) as environmental compensation for improper waste management in the state. "The compensation under Section 15 of the NGT Act was necessary to remedy the continuous damage to the environment caused due to the shortcomings in managing solid and liquid waste," a bench headed by chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said.
Archaeologists Discover 1.8 Mn-Year-Old Human Tooth
Archeologists have discovered a tooth in Georgia belonging to an early species of human believed to be 1.8 million years old. The tooth is one of the oldest signs of hominids discovered outside of Africa. The village Orozmani is close to Dmanisi, where human skulls with ages as ancient as 1.8 million years ago were discovered in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Sharad Pawar Re-Elected NCP's Chief
Sharad Pawar was re-elected the president of Nationalist Congress Party or NCP on Saturday. The 81-year-old leader will be party chief for another four years, the decision was announced at the party's national executive meeting in Delhi. Mr Pawar has been holding the office since the year 1999 when he founded the party with PA Sangma and Tariq Anwar after splitting from the Congress. Sharad Pawar was unanimously re-elected as the chief of the party.
Heaps Of Cash Found At Kolkata Firm In Raid
A search operation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has led to the recovery of over ₹ 17 crore from the premises of a businessman in Kolkata. The anti-money laundering agency raided six locations in Kolkata, where the ED brought in cash-counting machines to count the amount recovered. The search started on Saturday morning and the counting of cash ended on Sunday morning,
Crypto Firm Accidentally Transfers $10.5 Million
Cryptocurrency exchange Crypto.com accidentally transferred $10.5 million to an Australian woman's account while processing a $100 refund. The transaction went unnoticed for over seven months before a company audit revealed the error in December 2021. The company launched legal action to recover the money. Following the court's intervention, the customer's specific bank account was frozen in February. However, by that time, most of the money had either been spent or transferred to other bank accounts.
Facebook is shutting down its gaming app
Meta-owned Facebook has announced that it is shutting down its standalone gaming app later this year. The largest social media platform is reportedly sending notice to its gaming app users, informing that about the same. As per the notice, the app will be no longer available to download from October 28. Facebook launched its gaming platform - Fb.gg in 2018. It was then intended to compete with Twitch and YouTube.
Google to pay ₹25 lakh to find bugs
Technology giant Google has launched a new bug bounty programme where it will award up to $31,337 (nearly ₹25 lakh) to researchers who spot vulnerabilities in the company's Open Source projects. The newly announced Vulnerability Reward Program (VRP) will focus on Google software and repository settings like GitHub actions, application configurations, and access control rules. Depending on the severity of the vulnerability and the project's importance, rewards will range from $100 to $31,337.
Tata group in talks to assemble iPhones
Indian conglomerate Tata Group is in talks with Taiwanese supplier Wistron Corp to establish a joint venture to assemble Apple's iPhones in India. The venture would be the Indian salt-to-software group's latest push into technology manufacturing as it taps Wistron's expertise in product development, supply chain and assembly. The plan could result in the Tata group buying equity in Wistron's India operations or the two companies building a new assembly plant.
India restricts rice exports
India banned exports of broken rice and imposed a 20% duty on exports of various grades of rice on Thursday as the world's biggest exporter of the grain tries to augment supplies and calm local prices after below-average monsoon rainfall curtailed planting. India exports rice to more than 150 countries, and any reduction in its shipments would increase upward pressure on food prices, which are already rising because of drought, heat-waves and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Iga Swiatek wins US Open 2022 final
Iga Swiatek on Saturday won the Women's US Open 2022 final. The Polish tennis star defeated Tunisia's Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in 1 hour and 52 minutes in the final played at Arthur Ashe Stadium. It is the third grand slam title of Swiatek's career. Prior to winning the US Open 2022, she also won the French Open twice in 2022 and 2022. With this victory, Swiatek cemented her place as the world's number one ranked player.
Setback for NDTV
In a major setback for the two promoters of satellite channel company -- New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV), the Income Tax Department has said its permission is not needed for issuance of shares by the former's investment vehicle. The Adani group has initiated steps to takeover the NDTV by issuing an open offer for 26 per cent stake in the former and also by exercising its right to convert the share warrants issued by RRPR Holding Private Ltd.
India thrash Maldives 9-0
Anju Tamang pumped in four goals, while Dangmei Grace struck a brace as India toyed with Maldives to register a thumping 9-0 win in the SAFF Women's Championship at the Dashrath Stadium here on Saturday. India now moved to six points from two matches and sealed their place in the semi-final. India had earlier beaten Pakistan 3-0 in their tournament opener on Monday.

Rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh has officially ended his marriage with former wife Shalini Talwar after being married for 21 years. It appears the couple has reached a settlement in court after a year-long legal battle. The proceeding, which took place at the Saket District Court in New Delhi, was finalised after the singer has paid alimony of Rs 1 crore to his former wife.
New York Times report on Delhi Schools
Just as the raids on Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia were ending, the New York Times issued a strong response making it clear that its front-page article on the politician's transformation of Delhi's healthcare system and government schools was completely unbiased. The BJP tried to discredit the article and Mr Sisodia by flagging it as "paid news", an outlandish claim that was refuted by the newspaper. By pointing out that other publications syndicate its content, the New York Times has shot down the charge.

HC notice for charging toll
The Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC) has issued notice to National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and others over a petition challenging the grant of Provisional Certificate and establishment of toll plaza at Gadpuri, in Palwal district. The NHAI and D A Toll Road Pvt Ltd had set up the toll plaza at Gadpuri. The road at Ballabhgarh was to be upgraded from four-lane to six lane to decongest the traffic.
Adani Power to buy DB Power for $879 million
Adani Power Ltd (ADAN.NS) said on Friday it will buy thermal power plant operator DB Power for an enterprise value of 70.17 billion rupees ($879.14 million) as India's largest private thermal power producer looks to expand operations. DB Power owns and operates a thermal power plant in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh and the deal will help Adani expand its operations in the state.
BJP chief calls his party workers “Goondas”
BJP's Telangana unit president Bandi Sanjay on Friday stoked a row after he stated that his party workers are bigger "goons" than TRS workers but with a difference as they work for the welfare of the people. Mr Sanjay further slammed Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and stated that TRS government has money and power and is doing "dadagiri", while issuing a warning that the BJP workers are "bigger goondas" than TRS.
Handi Participants Injured In Mumbai
As many as 111 'Govindas' or Dahi Handi participants were injured while forming human pyramids during Krishna Janmashtami celebrations in Mumbai on Friday, civic officials said. While most of them were discharged after treatment, 23 participants were admitted to hospitals and their condition was said to be stable, informed a release issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The Maharashtra government had issued an order instructing government hospitals to treat the injured members of Govinda troupes free of cost.
FIFA sells 2.45mn tickets for 2022 World Cup
World Cup ticket sales have reached 2.45 million, FIFA said on Thursday, with more than 500,000 seats still available three months before the tournament starts in Qatar. Brazil's games against Serbia and Cameroon were among the most in-demand. The top 10 places ranked by ticket sales to their residents include Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The cheapest tickets for fans from outside Qatar are priced at 250 riyals (USD 69).
CBI Raids On Delhi Deputy CM
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday began conducting raids at 20 locations in Delhi-NCR in connection with the excise policy case. A CBI team also arrived at Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia's residence to carry out searches. Earlier, Delhi L-G VK Saxena had sought a CBI probe after an inquiry report claimed to have found “irregularities” in the AAP-led Delhi government’s new excise policy.
Blinkit pilots print out service
Zomato-owned quick commerce company Blinkit has started a printout service in Gurugram. It is charging an amount of Rs 9 per page for black and white printing and Rs 19 for coloured, according to media reports. Also, a delivery fee of Rs 25 will be charged by the company for every such order. Blinkit is focusing on providing academic printing services to customers like students and professionals. These include services related to rental agreements, visas and passports.
Euro falls below US Dollar
The euro dropped below parity against the dollar for the first time in almost two decades, as a hawkish U.S. Federal Reserve and growing concern about rising recession risks in the euro area continued to batter the currency. Europe's single currency started this year on a strong note given a post-pandemic economic recovery. But Russia's invasion of Ukraine, surging European gas prices and fears that Moscow could cut off supplies further has raised the spectre of recession and hurt the euro.
Truecaller launches 'Open Doors'
Truecaller has launched a new audio chat app that will rival Clubhouse & Twitter Spaces. Existing Truecaller will be able to sign in with one tap. New users will need to verify a phone number with a missed call or OTP. The app will need contact permissions to share the invite or connect with existing contacts using the app. The app will also need phone permission to execute audio conversations. Participants cannot see each other's phone numbers.
BJP MLA defends Bilkis Bano's Rapists
BJP’s Gujarat MLA CK Raulji, who was part of the panel that recommended the release of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case, defended his decision saying that the men were Brahmins by caste and had good values. Bilkis Bano was gangraped on March 3, 2002, during the riots in Gujarat. She was 19 and pregnant at the time. On 15th August, these 11 men were released after the Gujarat government approved their application under its remission policy.
